Social Action Committee

Embodying the Hebrew expression tikkun olam — the healing and repairing of our world — the Social Action Committee  (SAC) organizes our homeless shelter during the winter months, runs clothing, food, book, and blood drives, arranges for visits to area cemeteries for those in need of transportation, and provides educational programs on a variety of subjects including veterans issues, hunger, healing and visiting the sick,  the environment and more.   Under SAC sponsorship, Brotherhood recently joined the Jewish Climate Leadership Coalition, a nationwide group of nearly 200 synagogues and Jewish organizations convened by Adamah (formerly Hazon), committing to creating annual goals for our community that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as mobilize our community around climate action.  For more information or to volunteer, please email socialaction@brotherhoodsynagogue.org

In cooperation with the SAC and the RJC (Racial Justice Committee), the Brotherhood Committee on the Refugee and Immigration Crisis (BCRIC) was founded several years ago to promote social justice for refugees, asylees, and undocumented immigrants through education, advocacy, and relief.  Main projects include monthly dinners at Brotherhood for asylm-seeker families with children in NYC public schools; preparation and distribution of gift packages with seasonal clothing and games and toys for children; and expansion of our advocacy campaigns in conjunction with HIAS and the Synagogue Coalition for the Refugee and Immigration Crisis (SCRIC).
